Price Check: Intel's Core i7-6700K CPU In Short Supply
Demand for Intel’s Skylake CPUs has been very high since the introduction of the company’s latest processors in August. Even though the manufacturer has ramped up the supply of its Skylake CPUs since its launch, not all users can get these new CPUs. In fact, demand for higher-end Core i5-6600K and Core i7-6700K is so high that retailers recently increased prices of such chips. As a result, the quad-core top-of-the-range Skylake-S microprocessor is now more expensive than even the previous-generation six-core Haswell-E series.
Officially, the recommended customer price of one boxed Intel Core i7-6700K processor (four cores with Hyper-Threading, 4.0GHz/4.20GHz, 8MB cache, Intel HD Graphics 530 core, unlocked multiplier) is $350, according to Intel’s ARK. The recommended price of the Core i5-6600K chip (four cores, 3.50GHz/3.90GHz, 6MB cache, Intel HD Graphics 530 core, unlocked multiplier) is $243. However, at the moment it is not easy to buy thse CPUs without overpaying in the U.S. In fact, not all retailers even have the chips in stock, something that rarely happens to products released over three months ago.
For their part, Amazon does not currently have any Intel Core i7-6700Ks directly in stock. Instead the only 6700Ks available via Amazon are through their third-party marketplace sellers, starting at $499.99, which is nearly $150 higher than the recommended customer price. According to CamelCamelCamel, a price-tracker that monitors Amazon and its partners, the price of the chip began to increase in early October. Meanwhile Newegg sells the Core i7-6700K for $419.99, a smaller increase than Amazon but still higher than both Intel's original price recommendation and the price Newegg was charging at launch. Looking at Newegg's pricing history over at PriceZombie, it looks like Newegg increased the price of the chip beginning in November.
As for Intel’s Core i5-6600K, it's available at Amazon and Newegg for $289.99 and $279.99, respectively. The price of the chip has been fluctuating in both stores and at present the product costs slightly above its $243 MSRP.
Given these prices, it is noteworthy (and somewhat surprising) that Intel’s Core i7-5820K processor (six cores with Hyper-Threading, 3.30GHz/3.60GHz, 15MB cache, unlocked multiplier) is down to $389.99 these days, which makes it cheaper than the Skylake 6700K. The fact that the 5820K has to be paired with more expensive LGA2011-3 motherboards as well as quad-channel memory kits ultimately drives up the price of the total kit compared to a Skylake system, but that a still very performant hex-core CPU (ed: with solder!) is cheaper than Intel's flagship quad-core is something we rarely see. If nothing else it's a sign of just how unbounded quad-core pricing has become, though at the same time it thankfully provides a reasonable alternative to the 6700K and some counter-pressure to keep i7 prices from getting even higher.
When we asked Intel about what was going on with Skylake prices, they said in an emailed statement that they had not increased the MSRP of the 6600K/6700K - in other words, they had not increased prices on their end. Instead they suggested that select stores might have increased their prices because of strong demand for such chips, which is a pattern we've seen before with video cards and other components.
It goes without saying that retailers do not usually increase prices without a reason, as the intense competition among the online PC component retailers makes it difficult to hold too large of a margin under normal circumstances. All of this in turn points to an insufficient supply of microprocessors, with demand significantly exceeding supply.
Intel has previously mentioned that the costs of producing CPUs on their 14nm manufacturing process were higher than the costs of 22nm CPUs due to initially lower 14nm yields. However, the company has never revealed whether yields are a reason why higher-end Skylake-S processors are currently in short supply, or if the problem lies elsewhere in the production chain. With any luck we may find out a bit more once Intel hosts their next earnings conference call in January.

ASUS and ASRock Prep Gaming Motherboards for Intel Xeon E3 v5 Processors
ASUS and ASRock, two major makers of computer motherboards, are rolling out their platforms for Intel Xeon central processing units (CPUs) designed for gamers. While typically Xeon chips are more expensive than comparable Intel Core processors, they feature a number of technologies that make them rather attractive for end-users.
Xeons and Desktops
Intel Core processors for desktops offer performance and feature-set tailored for average users, but server-class Intel Xeon processors for single-socket machines sport such technologies as ECC, vPro as well as Trusted Execution, which may be important for users with custom requirements. Moreover, unlike Intel Core i5, all quad-core Xeon chips for uniprocessor systems feature 8MB cache and Hyper-Threading technology, which means slightly higher performance in single-threaded and multi-threaded applications. Intel Core CPUs have their own advantages over Xeon processors, such as unlocked multiplier on select models as well as Intel Identity Protection, but there are still users, who prefer to use Xeons.
Back in the days, Intel Xeon microprocessors for uniprocessor computers were compatible with premium core-logic sets for desktops, whereas Intel Core chips could work in systems designed for Xeons. However, starting from the Skylake generation of microprocessors Intel decided to change its approach to workstation- and desktop-class PCs. Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 microprocessors are incompatible with Intel 100-series chipsets for desktops. This helps Intel and its partners to better position their products for personal and professional usage.
Even though Intel would prefer to keep its Xeon central processing units away from the consumer market, makers of motherboards plan to give users a choice and are rolling out Intel C232-based platforms with LGA1151 sockets with features for gamers. The Intel C232 is not the most advanced core-logic for the Xeon E3-1200 v5 processors — it only has eight PCI Express 3.0 lanes, up to six USB 3.0 ports, up to six Serial ATA-6Gb/s ports, does not support vPro or Rapid Storage technologies, etc. However, it is also cheaper than the fully-fledged Intel C236 chipset, which is used for higher-end workstations.
ASUS Readies Four Xeon Motherboards for Desktop PCs
This week ASUS introduced its E3 Pro Gaming V5 mainboard that supports server-grade Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 processors as well as a variety of features for desktops PCs used by gamers, such as DDR4 memory overclocking, high-quality integrated audio, M.2 slot for solid-state drives, USB 3.1 support and so on. ASRock is also working on its Intel C232-based Fatal1ty E3V5 Performance Gaming platform compatible with the latest Intel Xeon E3 v5 chips.
The ASUS E3 Pro Gaming V5 motherboard is compatible with all central processing units in LGA1151 form-factor, including the Intel Core i3/i5/i7 and the Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 families of chips. The board features digital eight-phase voltage regulator module for CPUs that features solid-state chokes and high-quality capacitors. The platform comes with four 288-pin DDR4 DIMM slots, which support memory overclocking and XMP profiles, but do not support ECC technology. The motherboard also features two PCI Express x16 3.0 slots for graphics cards or high-performance SSDs (officially, only AMD’s CrossFireX multi-GPU technology is supported), two PCIe 3.0 x1 and two PCI slots for add-in-boards, one M.2 slot for SSDs (with NVMe support), six Serial ATA-6Gb/s ports for storage devices and so on. The ASUS E3 Pro Gaming V5 is equipped with the ASMedia ASM1142 USB 3.1 controller (and has one USB 3.1 type-A and one USB 3.1 type-C ports), Intel I219LM Gigabit Ethernet controller with ASUS GameFirst software technology that prioritizes gaming traffic, 7.1-channel SupremeFX audio with Realtek ALC1150 codec and so on. The E3 Pro Gaming V5 motherboard is compatible with liquid-cooling solutions, features onboard thermal sensors as well as automatic fan controls.
The Intel C232-based motherboard from ASUS is clearly a consumer-oriented system board, yet, with support for Xeon processors. In fact, even the layout of the E3 Pro Gaming V5 resembles that of the ASUS B150 Pro Gaming/Aura, an affordable platform for gamers. Next year the company plans to introduce three ASUS Signature-series motherboards — including the E3-Pro V5 (ATX), the E3M-ET V5 and the E3M-Plus V5 in micro ATX (mATX) form-factor — that will also support Intel Xeon chips. Apparently, ASUS plans to offer relatively inexpensive platforms for Intel Xeon E3 v5 microprocessors.
ASRock Preps Two Xeon Motherboards for Gamers
ASRock is another company designing consumer-grade motherboards featuring Intel C232 core-logic and compatible with workstation-class Intel Xeon chips as well as desktop-class Intel Core CPUs. The ASRock Fatal1ty E3V5 Performance Gaming/OC and the ASRock E3V5 WS will be the company’s first two mainboards to support Xeons along with certain desktop features.
The two Intel C232-based motherboards from ASRock will share one design, but will sport different style and different BIOS versions with slightly different feature-set. The motherboards will have high-quality five-phase digital VRM, four slots for DDR4 memory with or without ECC, two PCI Express x16 slots, three PCIe x1 slots, multiple Serial ATA-6Gb/s ports, USB 3.0 support, integrated audio and so on.
The ASRock Fatal1ty E3V5 Performance Gaming/OC was designed primarily for enthusiasts and gamers. The motherboard sports ASRock’s technologies like Gaming Armor, Key Master and Fatal1ty mouse port that are typically found on desktop-class platforms from the company. In addition, the Fatal1ty E3V5 Performance Gaming/OC features DDR4 memory and BCLK overclocking, something that server-class motherboards do not typically support.
The ASRock E3V5 WS was designed for workstations. It cannot overclock CPUs or memory and is not equipped with gaming features. However, it uses onboard Intel I219LM Gigabit Ethernet chip that was developed with servers. The E3V5 WS motherboard is compatible with AMD FirePro and NVIDIA Quadro professional graphics cards as well as with server operating systems.
Worth Considering?
While Intel’s Xeon E3-1200 processors are not designed for gamers or enthusiasts in general, given the shortage of Intel’s Core i7-6700K chips, some may consider to buy a Xeon E3 v5 processor with 8MB cache, Hyper-Threading and other technologies instead.
Since the Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 processors and the Intel C232 core-logic do not officially support overclocking, end-users, who would like to boost performance of their central processing units will have to experiment with BCLK overclocking, which may not provide very good results. Moreover, the C232 does not support as many PCI Express 3.0 lanes as the Intel Z170 or the Intel C236, which means expansion capabilities of desktops that use the core-logic will be limited.
The motherboards for the Intel Xeon E3 v5 CPUs from ASUS and ASRock look rather solid in terms of quality, but can hardly be called feature-rich. Nonetheless, if their price is right, a Xeon-based gaming system may be worth considering.

Intel reveals new Skylake and Broadwell CPUs with a difference
Intel has revealed a number of new CPUs of the desktop and mobile variety, with both Skylake and Broadwell processors being added to the company's official line-up.
What's interesting about these models – eight in total have been added to the firm's roster – is that they have rather different model numbers, indicating that they will be an unusual or niche spin on Intel's processor technology.
For example, the two new desktop processors are the Intel Core i3-6098P and the i5-6402P. As CPU World reports, the 'P' is likely to indicate that these are bereft of an integrated graphics solution (at least this was the case previously when Intel used this suffix).
The i3 model will be a dual-core CPU (with four threads) running at a base clock of 3.6GHz with 3MB cache, priced at $117 (around £79, AU$160). As for the i5 offering, that will be a quad-core model running at 2.8GHz with 6MB cache, with pricing set at $182 (around £122, AU$250).
On the mobile front, Intel is also introducing the Celeron 3855U and 3955U, ultra-low voltage dual-core processors which sip power and run at a clock speed of 1.6GHz and 2GHz respectively, both being priced at $107 (around £72, AU$147).
And at the more expensive end of the mobile spectrum, there's a pair of new Core i5 offerings (5200DU, 6198DU) and a pair of i7 CPUs (5500DU and 6498DU). These are all dual-core chips running at from 2.2GHz to 2.5GHz, the price pitched at $281 (around £199, AU$385) for the former, and $393 (around £265, AU$540) for the latter i7 processors.
As to what the 'D' stands for in these model numbers, that's not clear at this point.
There has been quite a lot of excitement around Skylake's overclocking potential, and indeed recently we've seen that even non-'K' (i.e. locked) desktop processors can be ramped up with some serious overclocking.
That means the good old days of buying a budget processor, sticking on a serious cooling solution and speeding it up massively are back – at least if you have a motherboard which has been updated with a workaround to get past Intel's restrictions (such as one from Asrock).

Where to find the best Boxing Day sales online in 2015:
Here's our rundown of where you will find the best Boxing Day sales on tech and games from Christmas Eve through Boxing Day itself.
TechRadar.com:
We'll be rounding up all of the best Boxing Day sales right here on techradar, so if you want a one-stop-shop for all of the best deals, we're your Huckleberry! We'll be trawling all of the major UK online retailers and pinpointing all of the very best deals, whether they be PS4, Xbox One, Cameras, laptops, iPhones and Android smartphones, wearables, Blu-ray players, videogames... you get the idea.
Carphone Warehouse
Many of the very best and most popular deals during Boxing Day last year came courtesy of Carphone Warehouse. The highstreet retailer is already pumping out Christmas deals but as soon as it's too late to deliver before Christmas day you expect CPW to pivot and start offering even bigger discounts. We'll pick out the best ones, whether they're standalone smartphones, contract phones, voucher codes or whatever else.
Quick link: Carphone Warehouse Boxing Day sales homepage
Mobiles.co.uk:
Like the site above, Mobiles.co.uk is taking advantage of the growing trend to buy and upgrade phone contracts online rather than on the highstreet. The site offered probably the best deals back on Black Friday so you can expect more of the same from this trusted site. We'll pick out what we think are the best offers and post them on this page so you can see what's worth buying and what's not.
Quick link: Mobiles.co.uk Boxing Day sales homepage
Amazon.co.uk:
Amazon has always been the crown jewel of the online discounters, but something seems to have changed in the last year. On Black Friday, Amazon's deals were vastly overshadowed by those of John Lewis, Argos, Currys and a few others. The site concentrated largely on lightning deals - offers which are only live for a very short amount of time. That makes them hard to spot, and the fact that Prime subscribers get first dibs means that regular folk often miss out. Amazon is hoping that you'll go there and spend money regardless. We hope for lots of Boxing Day sales deals from Amazon this year and we'll certainly bring you the best ones we find.
Quick link: Amazon Boxing Day sales homepage
John Lewis:
John Lewis was perhaps the surprise package on Black Friday. After speaking out against big sales events, it turned up on the day itself with some of the very best deals in the UK. It's such a big site that you can expect more of the same in the Boxing Day sales as it shifts the remaining stock on TVs, kitchenware, games consoles, tablets and more. We'll of course be paying close attention so that we can highlight the best bargains.
Quick link: John Lewis Boxing Day homepage
Currys.co.uk:
Currys is always there or thereabouts when it comes to online sales and it was right there in the thick of its during the Boxing Day sales period last year - both on the high street and online. Online is where the action is at, of course, because online you can drink sherry AND shop at the same time. As one of the UK's biggest electronics retailers you can expect some great deals on TVs, games consoles, tablets, ereaders and all the other usual stuff. Some deals will be better than others of course and we'll be here to let you know which sales items we think are the best!
Quick link: Currys Boxing Day homepage
Argos.co.uk:
Argos was one of the big winners on Black Friday - it launched its deals a week early and just kept adding them as November went on. You can expect Argos to be right in there on Boxing Day as well, with sales on basically everything from toys to consoles, iPads, smartphones, tablets, TVs and more.
Quick link: Argos Boxing Day homepage
GAME.co.uk:
GAME is definitely a hot retailer to keep an eye on during Boxing Day 2015. Last year's best deals included PS4 DualShock 4 controllers for under £30, PS4 bundles such as the console PLUS Grand Theft Auto V AND The Last of Us Remastered AND Destiny + Vanguard AND a 12 month subscription to PlayStation Plus... all for just £399.99. This year you can expect all the new console bundles to come down in price as well as some great deals on standalone hardware and games titles.
Quick link: GAME Boxing Day sales homepage
Zavvi.com
Specialising in movies, games and tech, Zavvi went aggressive on Black Friday and we have it on good authority that they'll be delivering some more exciting deals in the Boxing Day sales. Expect some best-ever PS4 and Xbox One deals as well as some sweet savings on DVD and Blu-ray boxsets, console games and assorted tech items like iPads and laptops. We'll be listing the site's best deals on this page, so you can either come to us for our selection of the best ones or go straight to Zavvi's Boxing Day sales page.
Quick link: Zavvi Boxing Day sales page
Tesco Direct:
Tesco Direct is building itself a good reputation as a destination for good prices on tech items online. Many of the best PS4 deals on Black Friday were available from this site so it's almost a given that we'll see the same again on Boxing Day. Expect also excellent deals on iPads and tablets, Xbox Ones, HD TVs, 4K TVs, Blu-ray players, Google Chromecasts and plenty more including videogames, DVDs and Blu-ray discs.

Boxing Day Sales / January Sales Fact File:
Boxing Day sales seem to start in September now. We're exaggerating, but only a little bit. Faced with the question of how their sales could stand out when everybody else was doing it, retailers decided there was only one solution: start before everybody else. In 2013, some retailers kicked off their Boxing Day and January sales the week before Christmas. This year they might have already started.
Boxing sales: online versus the High Street
Some retailers start their sales early, but only online - so you can expect to see some websites unveil deals on Christmas Eve that you won't be able to get in-store for another few days. And of course, online-only retailers from gadget emporiums to Steam are keen to get a slice of that sweet sales-frenzy pie, so they'll be running their own offers too.
Should I queue overnight for Boxing Day sales?
We wouldn't. So-called "doorbuster" deals tend to be very, very limited, and chances are you'll be way behind the organised eBay Tout Massive who know exactly what they want, what Buy It Now price they'll put on it and how to kill you with a single blow if it looks like you'll get to it before they do.
We'd recommend staying in bed until a reasonable hour, having a nice breakfast and then relying on a trusted technology website - hello! - to tell you where the best deals are online.
Have Boxing Day sales been overshadowed by Black Friday?
Tesco certainly thinks so: it's reported that it expects its Black Friday sales to be higher than its Boxing Day ones, although given Tesco's recent track record in reporting important numbers - something that's seen heads roll and the financial cops called - then we should maybe take that with a pinch of salt. We're sure Boxing Day 2014 and the January sales 2015 will be just as frenzied as they've always been - maybe more so, given the current climate of austerity.
Can you really get a great bargain on Boxing Day or in the January Sales?
Yes, sort of, maybe, if you know what you're doing and watch out for the tricks of the trade. And there are quite a few tricks to watch out for.
The most common trick is what the Consumers' Association calls "pseudo-sales"; that is, sales that look like sales and quack like sales but that aren't really sales. They exist because of retailers sticking to the letter of the law rather than the spirit.
Here's how it works. UK law says that retailers can claim to have discounted goods provided they've been at full price for 28 consecutive days in the last six months, so some firms simply double their prices to ridiculous levels for a month, drop them back to normal again and stick a SUPER HUGE MEGA DISCOUNT sticker on them. That, amazingly, is perfectly legal, and it's why every single Christmas tree in the world appears to be half price in December: they were twice the price throughout August, when nobody buys Christmas trees (if you did, you were robbed. Sorry. Why are you buying Christmas trees in summer anyway?).
TechRadar will only be promoting genuine deals on the day so if you're unsure, check back with this page!
Boxing Day Sales: what's TechRadar doing?
We'll be on hand on Boxing Day to unearth all of the best Boxing Day sales deals on the web, and we'll be listing them right here for you on this page. If you came to us on Black Friday, it's the same deal - we'll be regularly updating as more deals hit the web!
We'll be continuing this throughout the January sales with deals of the day so if you stick with us it'll be almost impossible to not find a bargain or two!
