FSP Readies Cheaper Hydro PTM+ Liquid-Cooled PSU: Up to 1000 W w/ RGB

https://ift.tt/2IWVT78

Last year FSP introduced one of the world’s first commercial liquid-cooled PSUs for PCs, the Hydro PTM+ with the maximum output of 1400 W. Quite naturally, such a beast carries a price tag that is reachable only by enthusiasts with deep pockets, so this year the company intends to launch a cheaper liquid-cooled PSU that is rated for up to 1000 W while also boasting RGB lighting.

The FSP Hydro PTM+ PSU will be rated for 850 W when cooled only by its internal fan, but will output up to 1000 W if a liquid cooling system is attached. Meanwhile, just like the case of the Hydro PTM+ 1200 W/1400 W power supply, under normal circumstances the new Hydro PTM+ 850 W/1000 W PSU will only turn on its fan when its load exceeds 50%, so in most of the non-gaming/light load cases it should remain utterly quiet. As an added bonus, FSP will equip the new Hydro PTM+ power supply with RGB lighting (which I expect will be compatible with the ASUS Aura Sync lighting controls).

FSP will demonstrate the new PSU at Computex (stay tuned with us for the Computex coverage next week), so it is not disclosing the PSU's exact specifications just now. But expect the new power supply to be compliant with the ATX12V v2.4 and EPS12V v2.92 standards as well as support all the latest CPU/system power states. Given the positioning of the Hydro PTM+ series, it is also logical to expect the new unit to be fully modular.

It is unclear when FSP plans to start selling the Hydro PTM+ 850 W/1000 W PSU and at what price. Meanwhile, it's worth keeping in mind that the Hydro PTM+ 1200 W/1400 W was largely an experiment, which took quite some time to develop into a commercial product and which solved inevitable teething troubles of the design. Therefore, expect the new unit to arrive this year (though, only time will tell).

AMD Preps New Ryzen 2000-Series CPUs: 45W Ryzen 7 2700E & Ryzen 5 2600E

https://ift.tt/2sutavC

AMD is gearing up to release four new Ryzen 2000-series processors based on a listing in ASRock’s CPU compatibility chart. The new Ryzen 5 2600E and Ryzen 7 2700E products feature a reduced TDP and are aimed at SFF and fanless systems, whereas the Ryzen 3 2300X, as well as the Ryzen 5 2500X parts, are designed for enthusiasts as well as overclockers on a budget.

The energy efficient Ryzen 5 2600E and the Ryzen 7 2700E will be AMD’s first Ryzen CPUs featuring a 45 W default TDP. Previously AMD has offered various Ryzen chips with configurable 45 – 65 W TDP that required system builders to activate the former profile for low power PCs, which in some cases could mean unpredictable performance. By contrast, the new products guarantee 2.8 – 3.1 GHz frequencies at 45 W, if ASRock’s CPU compatibility chart for the AB350M Pro4 motherboard is to be believed.

Just like their 65 W brethren, the energy efficient Ryzen 5 2600E and the Ryzen 7 2700E feature six and eight cores respectively (based on L2 capacity listed by ASRock). According to the motherboard maker, the Ryzen 5 2600E runs at 3.1 GHz, whereas the Ryzen 7 2700E runs at 2.8 GHz default frequency. Meanwhile, the motherboard maker does not list boost clocks. In any case, an addition of two 45 W parts into the Ryzen 2000-series lineup is a big deal for PC makers and DIY enthusiasts who want to build a SFF or even a fanless system based on AMD's latest CPUs.

Moving on to the new Ryzen 3 2300X and Ryzen 5 2500X processors. As expected, both feature four cores (with or without SMT) clocked at 3.5 – 3.6 GHz, an unlocked multiplier, a 65 W TDP, and Precision Boost 2 that automatically increases clock rate when a CPU is installed into an appropriate motherboard. Both chips are aimed at overclockers and enthusiasts on a budget, so expect them to be priced accordingly.

AMD has not announced the four aforementioned chips officially, so the company will not comment on them. It is unclear when and whether the energy efficient parts are set to hit the channel market, but in the past AMD sold its "E" products alongside with full-fledged ones. What remains to be seen is of course pricing of the new chips as well as cooling systems that AMD intends to bundle with the new parts.

Cooler Master Releases MasterCase H500M

https://ift.tt/2kBQX99

Cooler Master has launched a new case in the MasterCase H500M. The latest addition sits on top of their H-series lineup and seemingly based off of the H500P with some notable design changes including more glass panels and addressable RGB lighting on the front 200mm fans. The case includes both a mesh and glass front panel so users are able to choose between maximum airflow and aesthetics with Cooler Master stating the front panel options compliment the industrial design of the H500M in their own method.

External styling is quite simple with mesh features on the front and top of the case for ventilation, with glass in the middle. Other external design features on the black chassis include an angled front IO panel which has four USB 3.0 ports and one USB 3.1 Type-C port. The included ARGB controller is also located on the IO panel along with the power/reset buttons and audio in & out jacks. On the back of the case, Cooler Master has added two vertical PCIe slots to set up the video card vertically and show it off through the glass panel. The glass panels are held on by relatively flat screws seemingly requiring a tool for access.

Internally, the chassis is able to support up to a Mini-ITX size board all the way up to E-ATX size. For storage, the H500M has six 2.5-inch SSD bays and two 2.5/3.5-inch drive bays for a total of eight bays – plenty for most users.

As far as cooling support there is room for a 190mm (tall) CPU heatsink and numerous locations for water cooling/radiators. Both the top and front panels support up to 360mm radiators with an additional location for 120/140mm on the back. There is even a dedicated water pump bracket on top of the PSU shroud. The case comes with the two 200mm ARGB fans controlled via the included controller as well as a single 140mm fan on the back.

There are plenty of internal covers and shrouds, nine in total, to route and hide wires which should make for a clean internal appearance. The PSU shroud has a cutout cover giving users the option to display the PSU or leave it hidden. Towards the front of the shroud, there is even a removable plate for when using thicker radiators.

GPU support is up to a long 412mm and includes a graphics card support arm that mounts to the chassis. This rarely included and occasionally needed item is designed to help reinforce larger/longer graphics card and prevent sagging.

The MasterCase H500M is available for pre-sale as of now in North America with a starting MSRP of $199.99.

Intel reveals Optane memory sticks that go up to a colossal 512GB in size

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Intel has finally crammed its Optane technology into a traditional memory stick form, albeit with the initial offering unsurprisingly aimed at heavyweight rather than consumer usage – but this points the way to promising things to come.

Intel first announced 3D Xpoint tech, which Optane is built on, almost three years ago now, although thus far Optane products have only been available as SSDs (or cache modules to speed up traditional spinning drives).

This major move sees Optane transitioning to a standard stick of memory which can be slotted into your motherboard just like a plain old DDR4 RAM module. The result is called Optane DC persistent memory.

What Intel is shooting for here is an attempt to get the best of both worlds when it comes to system memory and traditional drive storage. Optane DC persistent memory will offer far better performance than an Optane SSD, and although it won’t be as quick as DRAM, it will boast seriously elevated prospects in terms of capacity. Intel also claims it will be more cost-effective than traditional memory.

And unlike traditional system RAM, Optane DC persistent memory, as the ‘persistent’ part of the name suggests, won’t lose the data stored on it when the host machine is powered down; so it acts like a drive in that respect.

Intel noted: “By expanding affordable system memory capacities (greater than 3 terabytes per CPU socket), end customers can use systems enabled with this new class of memory to better optimize their workloads by moving and maintaining larger amounts of data closer to the processor and minimizing the higher latency of fetching data from system storage.”

Corking capacity

So, we are looking at huge potential capacities, with Intel making the persistent memory available in capacities of up to 512GB per stick (yes, 512GB) to begin with. The company said it’s already sampling now, with shipping to select customers beginning later this year, and Optane DC persistent memory expected to be widely available next year.

The new memory is designed to work with Intel’s next-gen Xeon processors in data centers, where it is expected to have a “significant impact on real-world operations”.

That means a 9.4 times increase in database operations per second, Intel claims, and the ability for servers using the new memory to host more instances, as well as benefiting from restart times in the order of seconds as opposed to minutes for a DRAM-only cold restart.

The benefits are pretty clear, then. And hopefully, as mentioned at the outset, this points the way to some Optane advancements for the consumer on the memory front down the line.

Thus far, Optane has been available to the consumer user in the form of memory modules that act as a cache for a slower hard drive, and high-performance SSDs of various different flavors. While those storage applications are certainly impressive, the memory arena is where Optane is likely to make its greatest impact.

You can plug 20 graphics cards into Asus’ new monster mining motherboard

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Asus has revealed a new motherboard specifically designed for cryptocurrency miners who need lots of GPU power, with the mobo being capable of supporting no less than 20 graphics cards.

The H370 Mining Master motherboard (with an LGA 1151 CPU socket) follows up on the previous B250 Mining Expert board, and makes a number of refinements aside from the sheer amount of graphics cards you can plug into the thing (although admittedly, it’s only one more card than its predecessor, as the B250 supported 19 GPUs).

It replaces the B250’s PCIe x1 slots with vertical PCIe-over-USB ports that allow for USB riser cables to be plugged directly into the ATX motherboard. In other words, this connection is a sturdier method than using a PCIe card (as was required with the B250). And by using less parts, there’s less chance of issues occurring, so you should see better overall reliability in your mining PC.

Furthermore, Asus has introduced a suite of diagnostic utilities to help keep the mining rig running smoothly. Features incorporated include GPU State Detection, which scans the system at boot to look for any potential problems with connected graphics cards.

Debug disco

Asus also notes that the on-board diagnostics are complemented by individual debug LEDs that light up when issues are encountered, showing at a glance which components are having trouble.

Finally, the H370 also benefits from a ‘mining mode’ which comprises of various UEFI tweaks to ensure that some mining-related settings are optimally adjusted out of the box, saving the user the trouble of having to manually do this themselves.

Asus didn’t reveal any information concerning the price or availability of the new motherboard, but hopefully we’ll hear some details along those lines soon. The previous B250 currently retails at around £160 or $140 online.

Intel’s 5GHz-toting Core i7-8086K anniversary processor listed by retailers

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Last month, a rumor emerged that Intel was preparing a special anniversary edition Core i7-8086K processor – to mark the 40th birthday of the release of the first 8086 chip on June 8, 1978 – and now multiple retailer listings for the CPU are being spotted.

As Videocardz reports, the niftily-named Core i7-8086K has been listed by Italian, Canadian and US retailers amongst others, and according to these product listings, the price is set to be about €480 or $480 (around £360, AU$640). That’s about $70 (around £50, AU$95) more than Intel’s Core i7-8700K.

Of course, we have to take that pricing with a shovelful of salt, and indeed the existence of this Core i7-8086K is still unconfirmed, of course. At least one of the aforementioned product listings is still live, although the Italian retailer in question has already taken its web page down.

Big boost

So, this is certainly further evidence that such an anniversary edition processor does actually exist, but we can’t get too carried away at this point.

However, fingers crossed that this becomes a reality, because the chip’s rumored spec based on these fresh product listings is that it is capable of boosting to 5GHz out of the box, which would make it the first Intel chip to do so (with a purported base clock of 4GHz according to previous speculation).

That speculation also shows the Core i7-8086K is a six-core (12-thread) processor with a TDP of 95W.

The good news is that we’ll know for sure what’s happening a week on Friday, as that’s June 8, the anniversary date in question.

New Patriot Viper RGB Memory: Up to DDR4-4133

https://ift.tt/2skgXtm

Customizable RGB LED lighting has become ‘a new black’ for enthusiast-class PCs: virtually all manufacturers of nearly all components for advanced computers have already introduced various devices with customizable RGB lights. Patriot is a little bit late to the RGB party with its Viper RGB memory modules (though it has had Viper LED modules for a while), yet these DIMMs arguably look more aggressive than some competing products.

Patriot’s Viper RGB DDR4 modules are outfitted with the company’s brand-new aluminum heat spreaders with the Viper logotype that feature five RGB LED zones each of which can be customized. The RGB LEDs are compatible with software from all major makers of motherboards, including the ASUS Aura Sync, the ASRock Polychrome Sync, the GIGABYTE RGB Fusion, and the MSI Mystic Light Sync. In addition, Patriot will offer its own app to control LEDs on its Viper RGB DIMMs.

Patriot is taking a relatively cautious approach to RGB-enabled memory modules, so the initial lineup of Viper RGB DDR4 kits will include moderate to high-speed speed bins that will top at DDR4-4133 at 1.40 V, which is below 'extreme' offerings from some other makers. Meanwhile, the Viper RGB will be the highest-end modules in Patriot's lineup both in terms of performance and style.

Good news is that all the initial Viper RGB DDR4 kits are compatible with both AMD Ryzen- and Intel Core-based platforms (obviously, keeping in mind frequency-related limitations on Ryzen), so enthusiasts with different kinds of CPUs will not have to worry about compatibility. Meanwhile, the modules feature XMP 2.0 SPD profiles for Intel Core processors, but no special profiles for AMD Ryzen chips, which means that owners of appropriate PCs will have to load all the sub-timings manually.

The Viper RGB DIMMs are based on specially-designed PCBs to support RGB LEDs and to handle higher data transfer rates required from enthusiast-class memory modules. Patriot does not disclose which memory chips it uses for the modules, but we will update you once we obtain such information. In any case, most of contemporary DRAMs can run fine at 3200 - 3600 MT/s with 1.35 V, so the main question is how overclockable the mainstream Viper RGB DIMMs will be.

Patriot’s Viper RGB memory modules will be available starting late May or early June. Pricing will depend on market conditions and all the kits will be covered by a lifetime warranty.

Two New 35W Raven Ridge Parts: AMD Athlon 200GE and Athlon Pro 200GE

https://ift.tt/2kuVHNU

In this interesting world where processors are released but not formally announced, it means that when diving through the lists of supported CPUs on certain motherboards, we might find processors we have never heard of before. Thanks to some sleuthing on Twitter by one of our followers, we can detail that AMD has two new 35W Ryzen processors that we previously did not know about.

Over on the ASUS Crosshair VII Hero CPU supported list, the two new processors are listed, supported as of BIOS 0509:

Traditionally AMD uses the Athlon name for its combined CPU/GPU processors that have the GPU disabled (which AMD calls its NPUs, or non-accelerated processing units). What makes this interesting is that based on Geekbench data already submitted to the results database (on an ASUS B350M motherboard), these parts both have integrated graphics.

Between the two sources, it shows that the processors are essentially identical, with the difference in the Pro variant being that it falls under AMD’s commercial brand for customer support. The part then is a dual core processor with hyperthreading, running at a base frequency of 3.2 GHz, at a 35W TDP, and either 2 MB or 4 MB of L3 cache (both sources state something different: ASUS lists 4 MB, which is usually more accurate). Neither source states a turbo frequency, so it might come to pass that the Athlon processors do not have any turbo, but also missing is the information about the integrated graphics. Neither ASUS’ support list nor Geekbench traditionally lists this data. Geekbench does list it as a Raven Ridge part (which makes sense, being a CPU+GPU design), which would also mean it is built on 14nm.

Normally when processors are not announced with the rest of the set, it means one of two things. First, they are not important for the story, and so from a PR perspective it makes sense to the company to leave them out of materials (no matter how much that bothers the media), or that these processors are ‘off-roadmap’, and are built to order from a specific customer. At this point we are unsure of where AMD stands on these parts.

It is worth noting that these parts do not have the ‘Ryzen’ name in them.

Given the fact that it is a long weekend in the US, while we have reached out to our contacts at AMD, we are not expecting a response until Tuesday. More information as we get it.
