Microsoft Introduces A 128GB Version Of The Core i7 Surface Pro 3
This weekend Microsoft introduced a new model of the Surface Pro 3. Like the existing two Core i7 models, this new version uses Intel's Core i7-4650U CPU. At $1299 in the United States, the new model is significantly cheaper than the next Core i7 model, which starts at $1549. In fact, it's the same price as the high end version of the existing Core i5 model. With this new introduction, the Surface Pro 3 lineup is now as follows.
Microsoft Surface Pro 3 Configuration Options (Core i3 Omitted)
Configuration | $999 | $1299 | $1299 | $1549 | $1949
CPU | Intel Core i5-4300U | Intel Core i5-4300U | Intel Core i7-4650U | Intel Core i7-4650U | Intel Core i7-4650U
TDP | 15W | 15W | 15W | 15W | 15W | |
Cores/Threads | 2/4 | 2/4 | 2/4 | 2/4 | 2/4
Frequency Base/Max Turbo | 1.9/2.9GHz | 1.9/2.9GHz | 1.7/3.3GHz | 1.7/3.3GHz | 1.7/3.3GHz
GPU | Intel HD 4400 | Intel HD 4400 | Intel HD 5000 | Intel HD 5000 | Intel HD 5000
GPU EUs | 20 | 20 | 40 | 40 | 40 | |
GPU Frequency Base/Max Turbo | 200/1100MHz | 200/1100MHz | 200/1100MHz | 200/1100MHz | 200/1100MHz
Storage | 128GB SSD | 256GB SSD | 128GB SSD | 256GB SSD | 512GB SSD
RAM | 4GB | 8GB | 8GB | 8GB | 8GB |
In addition to the models above, Microsoft still offers a version at $799 with an Intel Core i3-4020Y CPU, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and Intel HD 4200 graphics.
The sacrifice you make with the less expensive Core i7 model is that it only comes with 128GB of internal storage, while the Core i5 version at the same price has 256GB of storage. However, you move up from Intel's HD 4400 graphics to HD 5000 graphics, which bumps the number of GPU EUs from 20 to 40. The Core i7 has a lower base frequency at 1.7GHz vs 1.9GHz on the Core i5, but it can turbo up to 3.3GHz which will outperform the Core i5's 2.9GHz in bursty workloads. Moving to the Core i7 also gets you 4MB of total CPU cache, instead of the 3MB in the Core i5.
The intended audience for this new model seems to be users who want more CPU and GPU power, but are able to survive within 128GB either by leveraging cloud storage or simply by not having many programs and files that they need to store. With this new model the Surface Pro 3 line has now expanded to six different versions. While there's still no option with 16GB of RAM, Microsoft now offers a different model to suit almost everyone's preferences.

Marvell Announces New Kinoma IoT Prototyping Platforms
Today Marvell announces two new internet-of-things (IoT) hardware prototyping platforms as part of their Kinoma "JavaScript-powered Internet of Things construction kit" lineup. The Kinoma Element and Kinoma HD provide alternatives to the Kinoma Create that was released last year.
The Element comes in a standalone square form-factor which I estimate should be about 7x7x1 cm. Marvell was unfortunately not able to share the exact dimensions of the piece but it looks compact enough given that it comes in a closed form-factor. The device is powered by microUSB port and has two expansion ports on opposite sides with 8 pins each that can be used for digital GPIO or analog ports and can be re-routed and re-configured by software.
The piece is powered by Marvell's MW302 WiFi-SoC microcontroller uses an ARM Cortex M4F at 200MHz and has 512KB of SRAM memory which serves as the platform's main memory. In terms of connectivity the device is capable of 802.11b/g/n but only in the 2.4GHz band and supports transfer rates of up to 72Mbit/s although those rates will in practice be probably be limited by the CPU's performance.
The device is able to make due with so little memory by employing execute-in-place (XIP) which is a method of executing code directly on it's SRAM storage instead of copying it to separate dedicated memory. The Element is able to run JavaScript byte-code as Marvell has implemented XIP in their new XS6 JavaScript engine.
The Kinoma HD is a beefier platform in the form of a HDMI dongle. The specifications are a tad higher as it is able to take advantage of a more powerful Marvell 88DE 3006 SoC running two ARM Cortex cores at 1.2GHz. We're still not sure what CPU we're talking about here but given it's part of the Armada 1500 family of SoCs we're likely looking at a Cortex A9 design.
As opposed to the Element which runs FreeRTOS, the HD runs a more conventional OS as it comes with a Linux distribution. It has 256MB of RAM and connectivity is provided by 802.11g/n/ac WiFi. The HDMI output is capable of 1080p and 720p resolutions.
Part of today's announcement was also the release of Kinoma's new JavaScript engine, the first independent implementation of JavaScript 6th edition scripting language. In conformance suites the XS6 engine is able to achieve 96% completeness for JavaScript 6th edition far ahead of any other JS engine. On the Kinoma platform JS6 among many language improvements also is able to provide up to 4x speed improvements for application start-up and now offers efficient binding to native C code and connect to OS and hardware features, which is something that is crucial for the KinomaJS development framework.
In the words of Peter Hoddie, VP at Marvell and former CEO of Kinoma before its 2011 acquisition:
“The software tools used to develop embedded hardware products typically lag leading edge software development by many years. IoT developers want the benefits of the latest language improvements, but the memory and CPU performance requirements put it out of the reach of mass-market hardware. With the XS6 engine in KinomaJS, we are bringing the latest advances in JavaScript to embedded developers before they arrive on the web,”
The Kinoma products thus represent a very low entry-barrier for IoT development and low time and resource investment to get a working prototype application running. Most importantly, it's the price of the new products that may be most attractive as the Kinoma Element and HD come at an MSRP of respectively US $19.95 and $24.95 and can be pre-ordered now with retail availability in Q4 2015.

AMD rubbishes rumour it's spinning off graphics and chip unit
Could AMD split into two companies? That's the scenario Reuters put forward over the weekend in a report that cited anonymous sources close to the matter.
According to the report, the embattled chip company could be looking to spin off its graphics division which was known as ATI when AMD purchased it for $5.4 billion (about £3.5 billion, AU$10 billion) in 2006.
AMD issued a statement in response saying that "we have not hired an outside agency to explore spinning-off/splitting the [graphics and general-purpose CPU divisions of the] company, we remain committed to the long-term strategy we laid out for the company in May at our Financial Analyst Day, which encompasses all parts of the business."
Marginal improvement
That article caused AMD's shares to spike, although "spike" is probably an overstatement given that the company's stock is currently not far from its 52-week low of $2.14.
At just over $2 billion, Intel's once formidable nemesis now seems to be on the ropes with a number of potential suitors (Qualcomm, Samsung, Broadcom) expected to line up fairly quickly should AMD decide to call it a day and put a "for sale" sign on its forecourt.

Updated: 10 reasons why you should build your next PC
Why you should build your next PC
Don't buy your next PC. Build it. The advantages are legion. For starters you have complete control over the build. You'll learn more about your machine by building it. You'll be able to pick components from manufacturers that you trust and you won't waste cash on components that aren't important.
You can build a system that's the perfect size for the space you have; a machine that hits your budget too. Hell, you might even save money.
Combine it with the most beautiful screen you can afford, and plug in the best darn peripherals around and you're good to go. Basically, build it yourself and you can create your perfect PC, as opposed to someone else's concept of perfection.
The bits you need for the machine you want
Of that long list of advantages, the key entry is the fact you get to pick exactly what goes in the machine, and thus tailor it to your needs.
If you want to play the latest games at the best quality settings, then make sure you dump most of your money on the graphics card, because that single component is going to be doing the lion's share of the work. Want to build a video editing system? Then plenty of memory, a beefy CPU and fast storage are all going to do you favours. Just want to build a budget rig? Pick the best value components.
Complete control
By building it yourself you have complete control over the hardware and your budget. That may not sound like much, but it offers a massive scope of versatility to your final machine, so you can make adjustments to spend more money on the parts you need, and less on the things you don't.
So where do you start? Your first task is to work out what you actually want to do with the machine. Work that bit out first, and then it's a case of picking the best components your budget will extend to.
What you'll need
For most machines your component list needs to include:
- Graphics card
- Processor
- Motherboard
- CPU Cooler
- Memory
- Storage
- Optical drive
- Case
- Power supply
- Operating system
- Screen
- Keyboard
- Mouse
- Headset/Speakers
Once you've got your perfect PC list it's time to actually go out and buy it.
Shop around and save cash!
It's a truism of modern consumerism, but if you want the best deals, you've got to shop around. There's an important caveat to bear in mind though, and it's a caveat that makes sense of some of the low, low prices you'll find on some of the most sought-after pieces of kit.
That caveat is your biggest nemesis in this bargain hunt: postage. Get each piece of kit from a different retailer and any savings you've made will be swallowed up by the shipping costs and then some.
Bundle for even bigger savings
The thing to do is to pick your list of components from several resellers and see which one works out cheapest overall. If there are one or two real bargains (even after including the shipping costs), then it may be worth buying those on their own, but the general rule is to buy everything from one, or maybe two, shops.
Start building
Once you've got all of your kit together, you're going to need to actually build it. Take your time, handle everything carefully (you really don't need one of those anti-static wrist straps, by the way) and everything should be fine. If you need a guide as a starting point, then this guide will give you a good idea how to go about things (don't worry that it's about building a Steam machine).
If you don't build, then at least customise
But if that still seems rather intimidating and you'd prefer to have a professional build your next machine, then at least customise the build. Pretty much every system manufacturer these days will let you tweak your system before hitting the buy button.
In the simplest form you should be able to tweak the amount of memory the system has, maybe even the amount of storage on offer. At the other end of the scale though you'll be able to use a motherboard of your liking, select what brand of SSD you want to use, not just the capacity, and even pick a case that works for you.
Be wary of the upsell
You do have to show some caution when doing such tweaks. Not because you can somehow screw up and end up with a machine that barely works, but simply because some system builders see such services as an opportunity to upsell.
Go with a reputable system builder. Read the forums detailing people's experiences with the company. As the components are going to be branded, get an idea of how much the kit you want to use costs, and if it's going to cost you much more than you expect at a particular place, then you should probably stay clear.
But really, just get your hands dirty
But really, customising a build doesn't give you anywhere near the same reward as building your own PC. Just get your hands dirty, learn about the inner workings of a computer and enjoy the experience and reward of creating your own machine from scratch.

Comparing Snapdragon 810 v2 and v2.1
Around a few weeks before the launch of the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro, I was digging through kernel source to understand Snapdragon 810 and some other Qualcomm SoCs. We had kept track of MSM8994v1 and MSM8994v2, which were relatively well understood in terms of what they represented. V1 was an engineering sample variant, which was discussed as early as September in 2014. This variant set both the A57 and A53 clusters to a ~1 GHz maximum. V2 was the first mass production revision, which was present in both the LG G Flex 2, and HTC One M9. However, shortly before the launch of the Mi Note Pro, we noted references to v2.1 in various kernel source trees. There wasn’t much of note other than a change to the chip ID and other identifying information at this point. It’s also important to note that phones that definitely didn’t have this variant of the SoC still had references to it in kernel source. The only way to truly verify whether a device has a certain revision of an SoC is to either see whether the file is included in the compilation process or to verify the revision by checking the device itself.
With the release of the Xiaomi Mi Note Pro and after getting our hands on a sample we were able to start piecing together everything to really understand what was going on with this new variant. The first and most obvious change in v2.1 is a mild increase in GPU clocks from 600 to 630 MHz. This represents around a 5% increase in performance, which helps to close the gap with the 772-700 MHz Mali T760MP8 graphics processor used in the Exynos 7420 of the Samsung Galaxy S6. This is fairly obvious to anyone that runs a graphics benchmark on this new variant, although this is a best-case improvement as inefficiencies elsewhere can erode the difference.
The other differences are far more subtle. The first is that there’s noticeably less throttling on the A57 cluster compared to Snapdragon 810 v2, although unlike the Snapdragon 808 and competing SoCs both variants of the Snapdragon 810 still see the unfortunate characteristic of ultimately forcing all threads off of the A57 cluster to stay within TDP limits in high load conditions, such as when running Basemark OS II’s battery test.
The second difference requires testing peak CPU bandwidth and latency between L1, L2, and main memory. In the interest of seeing maximum bandwidth, this memory test is multithreaded to run on multiple CPU cores, and combines read and write bandwidth to try and get as close as possible to maximum bandwidth available. The figures that we present here will represent a scenario where two threads, one reading and one writing will load the memory system simultaneously. This is done to try to saturate the main memory controller and to circumvent ARM's bus architecture which has dedicated read and write ports, leading to only half the total possible bandwidth in each direction.
We’ve also tested against multiple other applications such as Rahul Garg’s RgBandwidth and RamBench to verify these observations. We also checked with instrumented runs that the CPU, memory controller, and CCI interconnect were all running at appropriate frequencies so these results should be largely unaffected by the governor due to the 100% duty cycle of the load during the test.
The graphs above are interesting, but they don’t really illustrate the relative difference between v2 and v2.1. To better show this, the graphs below represent the percent difference between the HTC One M9 and Xiaomi Mi Note Pro in this test, where positive values are an advantage in favor of Mi Note Pro, while negative values represent an advantage in favor of the One M9.
From the calculations, memory latency improves on an average of 15%, but this is mostly concentrated in the L1/L2 cache portion of the test, while the differences in DRAM are relatively small. If we change the scaling to show less of main memory, we can see that most of the variance is present in that portion of the test. Given that we’re looking at time on the order of nanoseconds, I wouldn’t think too hard about these differences either. The only interesting thing to note in the latency test is that the “memory mountain” model is still valid, where we can expect about an order of magnitude increase in latency for each level of cache that we miss, where L1 appears to take about 5 cycles at 2 GHz, then around 15 cycles for L2, then around 600-700 cycles for main memory. (To put that into comparison for PC CPUs, L3 cache usually hits up to 70 cycles and up to 150 cycles for Intel's CrystalWell eDRAM before the jump out to main memory.)
The memory bandwidth values are really much more interesting though, as there’s a consistent improvement in bandwidth across the board. There is some interesting behavior around L1 cache, but this is likely due to the previously mentioned ramp time for frequency scaling. If we just look beyond L2, into the main memory, the result is that there’s around a 33% increase in bandwidth, and a 38% average increase if we look at the entire sweep through memory.
Overall, for a 0.1 revision, Snapdragon 810 v2.1 is a pretty significant change where memory is concerned. We also see some improvements in terms of thermal management, but we yet have to fully characterize just how much this improvement is and if it's enough to be able to compete with Samsung's 14nm silicon in the Galaxy S6. There were rumors floating around of a new revision due to show up in the summer, and it appears that this is the rumored revision. I question whether it made sense to release devices with the v2 revision, especially if future revisions would have resolved some notable issues and dramatically improved SoC performance. I also question whether OEMs would silently introduce these SoCs into later production runs of products that first shipped with v2, which is yet another can of worms. Putting these questions aside, this new revision brings much-needed improvements to the Snapdragon 810, and should go a long way as a stop-gap until Snapdragon 820 begins shipping. We'll see how the change from v2 to v2.1 affects performance on a higher level in our Xiaomi Mi Note Pro review coming shortly.
