Lian Li Releases PC-Q38 Chassis: Small and Versatile mITX Case
Lian-Li has announced their latest small form factor (SFF) chassis, the PC-Q38. Lian-Li calls the full aluminum, windowed Mini-ITX case one that focuses on performance per liter, offers liquid-cooling potential, and for those who find the PC-Q37 is too big for their needs. Outside of being smaller than the ITX supporting models surrounding it, the styling has changed. A single power button surrounded by a blue LED sits in the middle of the gray (or silver) brushed aluminum face The edges are rounded lending it to a more classic and subdued look.
The PC-Q38 looks the part of an HTPC and does not take over the room with a flashy appearance. Due to its moveable rubber-padded aluminum feet, it is able to be oriented both vertically, with the windowed panel to the left, or laid horizontal with the window on top. All panels, excluding the front and windowed panel, have long holes cut into them for ventilation purposes while all are easily removed for cleaning. Dust filters were not included, so more frequent cleanings may be required.
The front panel is located on the top (while standing up) and has two USB3.0 ports as well as 3.5mm front panel microphone and speaker plugs. Though many of the latest mITX motherboards will have USB 3.1 (10 Gbps) Type-C port on their back panel IO, I would have liked to see it on the PC-Q38’s front panel as well considering motherboards are offering front panel connections in teh latest chipsets already.
Specifications show support for 2x 120mm fans up top and what looks to be another on the back. The top of the case is able to house up to a 240 x 120mm radiator, or if air cooling is the plan, a CPU cooler up to 145mm tall can fit. Graphics card support is up to (L)315mm x (D)142m (over 12.75” long); Enough room for most high-end GPUs. Users are able to mount three HDDs inside the case, two 2.5” and one 3.5”, which should be adequate for many users, particularly those using an M.2 drive. By default, the PC-Q38 requires a SFX based power supply up to 140mm. Lian-Li will offer an optional bracket in order to use the more common ATX form factor units. And with their footprint also coming down in size, options are available.

Amazon Launches Fire TV 2017: 4Kp60, HDR, Dolby Atmos, Alexa Voice Remote
Amazon this week introduced its third-generation Fire TV streaming media player. The new TV appliance adds 4Kp60 decoding support with HDR along with Dolby Atmos, improving quality of video and audio playback. Besides, the third-generation Fire TV comes with the Alexa Voice Remote, making it easier to use various services using voice control. This time Amazon decided not to release a gaming version of the device, indicating that this type of entertainment is not going to be a primary purpose of the device.
Amazon redesigned the third-generation Fire TV STB quite significantly when compared to the first- and second-gen units. The company wanted to make the new product as small as possible and has actually succeeded in doing so by nearly halving the dimensions of the 2nd gen Fire TV. In a bid to reduce the form-factor, Amazon had to remove integrated Ethernet port, microSD card reader and USB 2.0 Type-A connector. The move somewhat reduces functionality of the new STB because now it cannot be used to watch content from microSD cards and USB drives. Meanwhile, when it comes to wireless connectivity, the new Fire TV has all the same features as the predecessor: it has a 802.11ac with 2×2 MIMO Wi-Fi controller and supports Bluetooth 4.1.
Besides the aforementioned external changes, there are major internal changes as well. Amazon picked up the Amlogic S905Z SoC for the 3rd gen Fire TV. The chip integrates four ARM Cortex-A53 general-purpose cores as well as a triple-cluster ARM Mali450 graphics engine. The SoC decoding H.265 Main 10 Profile Level 5.0 with HDR10 as well as VP9 Profile 2 with HDR10. In addition, the S905Z supports Dolby Atmos (EC3_JOC) audio. In any case, the addition of 4K at 60 Hz, HDR10 and Dolby Atmos looks like a major upgrade for the Fire TV, which will enable higher video playback quality compared to predecessors on appropriate 4K HDR TVs.
In fact, 4Kp60 video decoding, HDR10, Dolby Atmos support and cost were probably among the main reasons why Amazon decided to choose the Amlogic S905Z SoC. The latter is slower than the MediaTek MT8173C found in the 2nd gen Fire TV both in terms of general purpose and graphics performance since the MediaTek chip has two high-end Cortex-A72 cores running at nearly 2 GHz and a newer PowerVR GX6250 graphics engine. By contrast, the S905Z features four low-power Cortex-A53 cores and the Mali450 MP3 GPU based on a 2012 architecture. The choice of SoC also affected positioning of the new Fire TV: Amazon no longer positions it as a medial player and a small form-factor game console, thus, it does not offer a version bundled with a gamepad. Of course, the device will run certain casual games for Fire OS, but do not expect it to show beautiful 3D graphics, especially in a 4K resolution.
There are some other things to note about the 3rd gen Fire TV besides the new Amlogic S905Z SoC. The new unit only supports decoding H.264, H.265, and VP9 video, as support for H.263, VP8, and MPEG4 were removed. This may not be a major problem though. The new STB does not have any external connectors and therefore it is impossible to watch content from cards or USB drives, whereas major services rely mostly on H.264, H.265, and VP9 technologies.

In Win Launches Polaris RGB Premium Fan Series: Aluminum Frame, RGB Sync Compatibile
In Win, best known to most for their PC chassis, announced its new Polaris case fan series. The new Polaris fans differ from their Aurora fan lineup in a few ways. First, the frame on the Polaris is not square but uses a round transparent frame. Second, the Polaris lineup is made for silence, while the Aurora is made for performance (having slightly higher CFM and static pressure values), and a different overall aesthetic; more of a traditional case fan look.
The Polaris lineup comes in one size, 120mm x25mm, and three different flavors; Polaris LED, Polaris RGB, and Polaris RGB Aluminum. The base model, the Polaris LED, is available in multiple colors including white, blue, green, and red. The six hub-embedded LEDs shine through frosted fan blades and transparent PBT frame for a unique visual display. The RGB models swap out the single color LEDs for RGB LEDs allowing users to fully customize the color. They also sync with most motherboards equipped with RGB control including ASUS’ AURA SYNC, MSI’s Mystic Light Sync, and GIGABYTE’s RGB Fusion software. The RGB Aluminum model swaps out the transparent frame for a diamond-cut, laser-etched aluminum housing and is the flagship model of the Polaris lineup.
The PWM controlled silent fan is said to produce only 20.2dB while pushing 43.31 CFM at 1.26mm/H20 static pressure at its maximum speed of 1280 RPM. Power use for the fan alone is rated at 1.2W/0.10A. Combined with the RGBs, it is 2.4W/0.20A. The light power can allow a couple to be daisy-chained together using the same motherboard header. In Win includes its own 8-pin connecting wires ( 800mm and 100mm) to connect from fan to fan and minimize cable clutter inside the chassis. A total of eight fans can be daisy-chained together.
The Polaris fans use a sleeve bearing in the hub while In Win puts the life expectancy at 35000 hours. This is slightly less than the Aurora models rated for 36000 hours. The big difference is the Aurora fans life expectancy values are rated at 40C while the Polaris models are much lower at 25C. One can’t tell how much, if any, this will reduce life expectancy on the Polaris line running above 25C, but I have to imagine there will be plenty of instances where internal case temperatures go above the 25C mark. The circular PBT or aluminum frame drops right into a shockproof frame to mount to the case. The frame uses rubber stands to reduce vibrations transmitted to the case.
One item to note when considering these fans: Users are required to purchase the two fan package before the single fan package. Per In Win, the Polaris RGB single pack will not operate on its own, you must the Polaris RGB Twin Pack first and daisy-chain them together. The twin pack includes the needed cables while the single fan is intended to be an add-on. MSRP on the twin pack is $39 while the single is $20.

Best Laptops: Q3 2017
Every quarter we like to take a look at the market and offer a summary for a quick recommendation list of laptops. The major announcement of note over the last quarter was the introduction of the 8th Generation Intel Core CPUs for notebooks, which is significant in that it finally brings the option of quad-core laptops in the 15-Watt U series. Prior to this, anyone wanting more than two cores, and four threads, would have had to step up to the 45-Watt H series, which is generally only found in larger notebooks around 15.6-inches or so. However the rollout of the 8th Gen quads is a bit slow, so not everyone has them available right now.

As always, we’ll break the guide down into several segments to serve various markets, from low-cost, to mid-range, to high end.
Low-Cost Notebooks
First up is the entry-level devices, and although they may cost less than the rest, that doesn’t necessarily mean they will be short of features.
Chuwi LapBook 14.1
If you’re after a mid-size notebook at an affordable price, it’s hard to go wrong with the Chuwi LapBook 14.1. It offers a 1920x1080 IPS display, which is somewhat of a rare find in this segment of 1366x768 TN laptops. It’s based on Intel’s Apollo Lake Celeron N3450, which is four Atom Goldmont cores that can go up to 2.2 GHz. 4 GB of Dual-Channel RAM coupled with 64 GB of eMMC storage make this a surprisingly capable notebook for the price, and although it’s plastic, the material has a great texture to it. This is one of my favorite notebooks of 2017 so far, and it sells for $270 USD.
Chuwi LapBook 12.3
Another Chuwi may seem like favoritism, but this company has been releasing some very interesting PCs for price-sensitive buyers, and the LapBook 12.3 continues the trend of the 14.1 by offering a lot of bang for the buck. Obviously, the name gives away the hint that this is a smaller notebook, but the 12.3-inch display is actually the same 3:2 2736x1824 panel found in the Microsoft Surface Pro, so it offers an impressive 267 pixels-per-inch in this laptop chassis. Like the LapBook 14.1, it’s also powered by a quad-core Celeron N3450 with Intel Atom Goldmont CPU cores, but the LapBook 12.3 bumps the memory from 4 GB to 6GB, while keeping the same 64 GB of eMMC storage. It’s relatively light at 1.45 kg / 3.18 lbs, but heavier than a more expensive Ultrabook would be. We just had a chance to review this device, and it was seriously impressive for the cost. Plus, you can add a M.2 2242 SATA SSD if you want to bump the storage. It's a price bump over the 14.1, but the move to an all-aluminum body makes it feel a lot more premium than the $330 price would suggest.
Budget Ultrabooks
Sleek, thin, and capable, Ultrabooks have defined the laptop over the last several years. There have been significant increases to batter life, display quality, and build materials across several lines, and every company now offers at least one laptop in this category.
ASUS ZenBook UX330UA
ASUS has a reputation of offering more for less, and the UX330UA follows in that tradition. It features a brushed aluminum chassis packing a 13.3-inch 1920x1080 IPS display, and it weighs in at just 1.18 kg / 2.6 lbs, so it’s very portable. This is a Core i5-7200U model, with 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD. ASUS also offers a keyboard with an impressive 1.5 mm of travel, and a fingerprint reader for Windows Hello. ASUS is generally quickly onboard with new standards too, and the UX330 offers a USB-C port, although it’s a Gen 1 version. It's hard to go wrong with this for the price though, since the i5 model with 8 GB / 256 GB is only $699, which is a great entry point to the Ultrabook market.
Premium Ultrabooks
Dell XPS 13
Dell’s XPS 13 has aged well, and it still offers one of the slimmest bezels on any notebook. Dell was one of the first to announce support for the 8th Gen quad-core, and it's available now, but the Kaby Lake models are still around as well, so if you're after an i7, pay attention to what you're getting. The base model still comes with just 4 GB of RAM, so the jump to the 8 GB / 256 GB model is likely the best target for entry if looking at the XPS 13. The highest end models come with a beautiful 3200x1800 QHD+ display, compared to the 1920x1080 panel on the base model, but the lower resolution is easier on the battery. The webcam is still in an awkward location on the bottom bezel of this notebook, thanks to the thin top bezel, so if you’re a heavy webcam user this may be enough to dissuade you from considering this otherwise excellent laptop.
Microsoft Surface Laptop
Microsoft’s Surface brand has some significant advantages over much of the competition, including individually calibrated 3:2 displays, which make them much better for content creation. The Surface Laptop also has an Alcantara keyboard cover, which should offer an interesting feel to the typing experience. There is a Core i5-7200U model, or you can opt for the Core i7-7660U with Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 with 64 MB of eDRAM and 48 Execution Units on the GPU, up from the standard 24 Execution Units of the generic U series. The display is the same size as the Surface Book, at 13.5-inches, but the resolution drops a bit to 2256x1504, compared to the 3000x2000 of the Surface Book. The lower resolution is likely partially to keep costs down, and also to keep battery life in check. The Surface Laptop weighs in at 1.25 kg / 2.76 lbs, and will be the first laptop shipping with Windows 10 S. This will be a more restrictive version of Windows 10, only allowing Windows Store apps to be installed, but Surface Laptop buyers will be able to unlock Windows 10 Pro for free for the first year. The Surface Laptop will be available in four colors, starting at $999 for the Core i5/4GB/128GB model, and up to $2199 for the Core i7/16GB/512GB version. We've not had a chance for a full review of the Surface Laptop yet, but we have had a chance to try it out. The attention to detail is high, which is the case with most Surface devices, and it's hard not to love the 3:2 display.
eGFX Support
Razer Blade Stealth
Razer has updated the Stealth, and the updates are significant. The Stealth was always a great looking Ultrabook, that suffered from large display bezel syndrome. Razer has addressed this with a new 13.3-inch model, in the same chassis as the original 12.5-inch laptop. The new display is a QHD+ (3200x1800) sRGB panel. They still offer a FHD (1920x1080) sRGB and UHD model (3840x2160) with AdobeRGB gamut support, in the original12.5-inch display. The FHD 12.5 is the lowest cost, but the 13.3 is likely the nicest pick of the bunch. Either model comes with a Core i7-7500U, 16GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of NVMe SSD. Razer still brings its gaming roots to the table too, with an individually lit RGB keyboard, offering almost limitless combinations of color, and external graphics support, in case you want to dock this using the Thunderbolt 3 port and add a desktop graphics card. It’s a very nice, light laptop, with the Razer traditional CNC aluminum chassis, which can now be found in Gunmetal Gray, along with the traditional Black.
Convertibles
HP Spectre x360
HP’s design team created a very stunning notebook in the Spectre x360, and it’s certainly not form over function. The 13.3-inch display is 1920x1080, and it’s fitted into a narrow bezel giving it an edge-to-edge screen. The dark ash and copper color scheme on the aluminum is very striking, and it’s powered by the usual Ultrabook components in the Kaby Lake U series, with up to 16 GB of DDR4 and 256 GB or 512 GB SSD options. It’s also a 2-in-1, offering a flip-around display to function as a touch device. For those that want a larger laptop in the same Ultrabook form factor, HP also offers this as a 15.6-inch model with a UHD display and GeForce 940MX graphics. The larger model is 2.0 kg / 4.41 lbs, compared to just 1.31 kg / 2.89 lbs of the smaller 13-inch model, but both are very nice looking notebooks. Even though it's not been updated to 8th gen yet, if you need a convertible, this is still a touch option to not consider.
The Surface Pro has come a long way since the original version launched, and the latest generation is a refinement of the already excellent Surface Pro 4. The biggest changes inside are that it's now powered by Kaby Lake processors, but even more interestingly, the Core i5 model has gone completely fanless. We got a chance to review the Core i7-7660U model with Iris Graphics, and it was simply fantastic. The performance was excellent, while at the same time, the sound levels had decreased, and battery life had increased. Microsoft has softened the edges of the convertible laptop, to great effect. The move ot Kaby Lake has also solved the power management issues that plagued the Surface Pro 4, especially at the start of its life. The high end models can get expensive, and the keyboard and pen are both add-on options, but the 3:2 display and attention to detail put the Surface Pro over most of, if not all, of its competition.
15.6-inch Laptops
We’ve already mentioned the HP Spectre x360, since it has a 15.6-inch version, but for some people they need a bit larger computer, with a true quad-core CPU and possibly discrete graphics. The larger notebooks have the room for the additional cooling required for the 45-Watt quad-core processors.
Dell XPS 15
Dell took the winning formula with the XPS 13 and applied it to their larger XPS 15, and the result is a great looking laptop, which has a 15.6-inch display in a smaller than normal chassis. The latest XPS 15 9560 offers quad-core Kaby Lake CPUs, along with the latest NVIDIA GTX 1050 graphics, which is a big jump in performance over what’s available in any Ultrabook. You can get a UHD display with 100% of the Adobe RGB gamut as well, although the battery life takes a big hit with that many pixels, so the base 1920x1080 offering may be better suited to those that need a bit more time away from the power outlet. The keyboard and trackpad are both excellent, just like the XPS 13, and it features the same styling cues. The XPS 15 starts at $999. We got a chance to review the latest XPS 15, and it doesn't disappoint.
Apple MacBook Pro 15
Apple has kept the same Retina display resolution for the newest MacBook Pro, but improved the color gamut to cover the P3 color space instead of just sRGB. They’ve slimmed the 15-inch model down a lot, making it only four pounds, and they’ve embraced the next generation of IO with USB-C and Thunderbolt 3. Unfortunately, they’ve completely abandoned the USB-A ports though, so be prepared grab USB-C versions of any peripherals you may need.
The 15-inch MacBook launched with Skylake quad-core CPUs, and feature an AMD Polaris GPU that can drive up to six displays, or, two of the new 5K displays that were announced as well, in addition to the laptop panel. Combined with the low profile and weight, and the latest generation MacBook Pro packs a lot of performance into relatively little space.
Apple has moved to the butterfly switch keyboard on this model as well, and they’ve added a touch bar instead of the function keys. Not everyone has loved the latest MacBook Pros, but if you’re after a new macOS device, these are the best offerings right now.

Intel vs AMD: which chipmaker does processors better?
There are a lot of moving parts when it comes to PC upkeep, and it only gets more onerous once you’ve reached the point where it’s time for an upgrade.
On the bright side, building and maintaining a PC comes down to little more than a basic understanding of how one works. Among the most important parts of a computer is the CPU, otherwise known as the processor.
If the motherboard is the PC’s skeleton, the CPU is the brains of the operation. Finding the best processor for your needs is a bit tougher than simply declaring you’re a fan of Intel or AMD.
Because there are stark differences in the chips produced by these two companies, whose efforts combined would dominate the entire computer processor market, it’s important to be aware of the nuances each brings to the table.
Like the war waging in the graphics cards space between Nvidia and AMD, the rivalry of AMD vs Nvidia is a ruthless competition between two brands that quite honestly have an equal number of perks and disadvantages. It’s just that AMD is playing catch up to Intel – a name that went virtually unchallenged for years.
So while Intel’s 7th- and 8th-generation Kaby Lake processors are thriving in the laptop space, AMD is only getting started. Vice versa, AMD’s Ryzen chips are experiencing overwhelming success, both commercially and critically, in high-performance desktop PCs. For those readers curious as to why that is, keep reading to find out the differences between AMD and Intel.

For bargain shoppers on the prowl for the next hottest deal, it used to be a widely debatable misconception that AMD’s processors were cheaper, but that was only because the red team did its best work at the entry level.
Now that Ryzen processors have proven AMD’s worth on the high-end, the tide has ostensibly turned. Now Intel reigns supreme in the budget CPU space, with its $97 (£80, AU$75) Pentium G4560 offering far better performance than AMD’s $94 (£85, £148) A12-9800.
Much of this is due to the Advanced Micro Devices company’s reluctance to move beyond simply iterating on its antiquated Bulldozer architecture and onto adopting the current-generation “Zen” standard it’s already introduced with pricier CPUs.
Still, on the low end, Intel and AMD processors typically retail at about the same price. It’s once you hit that exorbitant $200 mark where things get trickier. High-end Intel chips now range from 4 up to 18 cores while AMD chips can now be found with up to 16 cores.
While it was long-rumored that AMD’s Ryzen chips would offer cutting-edge performance at a lower price, benchmarks have demonstrated that Intel is remaining somewhat competitive.
The Intel Core i7-7700K, for instance, can be found for less than $300 USD now, while the still-less capable Ryzen 7 1800X is priced at $499 (about £391, AU$662).
With that in mind, CPU pricing fluctuates constantly. Wait a few months, and you'll soon discover that the Ryzen 7 1700 you were eyeing has dropped well below market value. Even so, patience is a virtue easier said than followed.
If you want the best of the best performance with little regard for price, then turn your head towards Intel.
Not only does the Santa Clara chipmaker rank consistently (albeit only slightly) better in CPU benchmarks, but Intel's processors draw less heat as well, blessing them with lower TDP (thermal design point) ratings across the board.
Much of this is owed to Intel's implementation of hyper-threading, which has been incorporated in its CPUs since 2002. Hyper-threading keeps existing cores active rather than letting any of them remain unproductive. Even though AMD has implemented simultaneous multi-threading (SMT) in its Ryzen processors, Intel has – for the most part – stayed on top in performance benches.
Historically, however, AMD has taken pride in its focus on increasing the number of cores in its chips. On paper, this would make AMD's chips faster than Intel's if it weren't for the negative impact on heat dissipation. Luckily, the newer Ryzen chips have mitigated a lot of the overheating concerns of the past, so long as you have a decent cooling rig attached.
While it’s not hard to keep an Intel processor cool, because AMD likes to shove as many cores as possible into a single processing unit, its chips tend to run hotter, meaning you’ll probably have to invest in one of the best CPU coolers to avoid throttling.
Still, $249 (about £194, $330) for a six-core processor is unparalleled, even if the extra cores are only really beneficial in multi-tasking scenarios like streaming gameplay on Twitch. There’s a huge pool of Twitch broadcasters alone that might find AMD’s Ryzen-series processors more appealing than Intel’s Kaby Lake.
By this point, Intel and AMD have effectively reached a level of parity in terms of performance, but pretty soon that may no longer be the case. While AMD is busy cranking out its top-end Threadripper processors, Intel claims that its Coffee Lake lineup will include its best gaming CPU ever.
If you're building a gaming PC, truthfully you should be using a discrete graphics card, or GPU (graphics processing unit), rather than relying on a CPU’s integrated graphics to run games as demanding as Middle Earth: Shadow of War.
Even though it’s possible to run less demanding games along the lines of Overwatch without a dedicated graphics card, there’s no denying the wide-open space for improvement. Unfortunately, that doesn’t appear likely to happen, especially with AMD’s entire range of Ryzen processors requiring that you also buy a graphics card.
Be that as it may, if all you're looking to do is play League of Legends at modest settings or relive your childhood with a hard drive full of emulators (it's okay, we won't tell), the latest Intel Kaby Lake or AMD A-Series APU processors will likely fare just as well as any top-end graphics card.
At one time, for low to mid-tier gaming, AMD's Radeon chips were far superior to anything offered by Intel. With the arrival of Intel's Iris Pro graphics, however, that sentiment is becoming more and more refutable. This position is only legitimized by AMD’s Ryzen chips, which don’t bear integrated graphics at all.
On the high end, such as in cases where you'll be pairing your CPU with a powerful AMD or Nvidia GPU, Intel’s processors are typically better for gaming due to their higher base and boost clock speeds. At the same time, though, AMD provides better CPUs for multi-tasking as a result of their high core and thread counts.
While there is no clear winner in the graphics department, survey says AMD is the better option for integrated graphics (for now), while hardcore gamers who don’t mind shelling out the extra cash for a GPU will find that Intel is better for gaming alone, whereas AMD is superior for carrying out numerous tasks at once.
When you buy a new computer or even just a CPU by itself, it's typically locked at a specific clock speed as indicated on the box. Some processors ship unlocked, allowing for higher clock speeds than recommended by the manufacturer, giving users more control over how they use their components (though, it does require you know how to overclock).
AMD is normally more generous than Intel in this regard. With an AMD system, you can expect overclocking capabilities form even the $149 (about £100, AU$160) Ryzen 3 1300X. Meanwhile, you can only overclock an Intel processor if it's graced with the “K” series stamp of approval. Then again, the cheapest of these is the $149 (£133, AU$195) Intel Core i3-7350K.
The other unlocked chips Intel offers are pretty impressive. The i7-7700K, for instance, is capable of maintaining a 4.5GHz turbo frequency in comparison to the 4.2GHz boost frequency of the Ryzen 7 1800X. If you’ve access to liquid nitrogen cooling, you may even be able to reach upwards of 6.1GHz using Intel’s monstrous, 18-core i9-7980XE.
In the end, the biggest problem with AMD processors is the lack of compatibility with other components. Specifically, motherboard (mobo) and cooler options are limited as a result of the differing sockets between AMD and Intel chips.
While a lot of CPU coolers demand that you special order an AM4 bracket to be used with Ryzen, only a handful of the best motherboards are compatible with the AM4 chipset. In that regard, Intel parts are slightly more commonplace and are often accompanied by lower starting costs, too, as a result of the wide variety of kit to choose from.
That said, AMD's chips make a little more sense from a hardware design perspective. With an AMD motherboard, rather than having metal connector pins on the CPU socket, you'll notice those pins are instead on the underside of the CPU itself. In turn, the mobo is less likely to malfunction due to its own faulty pins.
Nevertheless, deciding on a CPU is ultimately up to personal preference. Where an Intel processor shines most when married to a graphics card, AMD's chips are surprisingly capable without a discrete GPU. Well, that at least applies to the APU kind, not the ones called Ryzen.

Intel’s 18-core processor peaks above 6.1GHz with liquid nitrogen cooling
Intel’s new monster Core i9 processors boasting 18-cores and 16-cores have just gone on sale, and Asus has set some blistering new records overclocking these CPUs with its ROG Rampage VI Apex motherboard.
Using the Core i9-7980XE 18-core processor (with a base clock of 2.6GHz, Turbo to 4.2GHz) cooled with liquid nitrogen to around -100°C, expert ROG overclocker ‘der8auer’ managed to push the chip to 6.104GHz across all 18 cores (at 1.55V).
All without the CPU being reduced to a melted pile of goop, although the system wasn’t stable enough to run benchmarks at this speed.
To get some testing done, things had to be toned down to 5.6GHz with a voltage of 1.45V, at which point the multi-threaded Cinebench R15 benchmark could be run – Asus notes that there was almost 1000W coursing through the system.
The Cinebench R15 CPU score notched up was 5,635, a mind-boggling figure when you consider it almost doubled the previous record of 2,990 (another overclocker, ‘elmor’, pushed the chip even further to set a new record of 5,723).
New records were also achieved in 3DMark Vantage 2x with the CPU at 5.66GHz, with Italian overclocker ‘Rsannino’ achieving a score of 138,185 (compared to the previous record of 135,813).
He further blew away the Geekbench3 multi-core record – which stood at 48,004 – with a score of 92,307, again a massive leap.
Core i9 blimey
Furthermore, Rsannino clocked the Core i9-7940X (with 14-cores, base clock 3.1GHz) up to 5.7GHz, and again set a new Cinebench R15 record (4,339 compared to the previous 2,424) along with Geekbench3 multi-core (70,618 eclipsing the previous record of 40,155).
A load of other new highs were reached, and you can see the full list of benchmark records in this Asus article.
As ever, these sort of liquid nitrogen shenanigans are a far-cry from real-world overclocking and performance, but you can still gauge the relative power of Intel’s new monster processors in terms of how much they blew away the previous (equally super-cooled) records.
Of course, should you be tempted to invest in Intel’s flagship 18-core CPU, you’ll need deep pockets as it retails at $1,999 (about £1,480, AU$2,510), but it is exceptionally powerful, as these benchmarks illustrate – and as we found out in our full review.
However, it costs twice as much as AMD’s 16-core Ryzen Threadripper 1950X.

Nvidia’s new drivers mean GeForce graphics cards work with macOS High Sierra
Nvidia has just released new drivers for its PCIe graphics cards to ensure compatibility with the latest version of macOS 10.13, known as High Sierra.
Driver version 378.10.10.10.15.114 introduces a raft of performance tweaks and bug fixes, along with compatibility for Pascal-based (i.e. Nvidia’s latest) GeForce and Quadro GPUs in the current version of High Sierra.
This means that those with a Mac Pro running these graphics cards can (at least theoretically) safely upgrade to macOS 10.13.
Also note that beta support has been introduced for iMac and MacBook Pro systems which are hooked up to external GPU enclosures using the aforementioned Nvidia graphics cards.
However, remember that the latter is still in beta, so the results you get could be somewhat unpredictable at this point.
Tackling trouble
As 9 to 5 Mac reports, there’s a useful ‘Hackintosh’ (a term that refers to running macOS on non-Apple hardware) thread on the new drivers here, including advice on how to tackle any possible issues you might encounter.
You can grab the new GeForce (and Quadro) driver here, and there’s also an updated CUDA driver (with version 9.0 of the toolkit) here.
Apple revealed its own first-party external GPU box aimed at developers back in the summer, and the consumer version of this graphics supercharger is expected to be available in the spring of next year. Of course, there are alternative third-party solutions already out there.
In other graphics news today, Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang is still banging the drum about Moore’s Law being dead, with a fresh assertion (spotted by PC Gamer) that GPUs are going to replace CPUs entirely before too long, simply because of the pace at which GPU design is advancing.
