MSI Infinite X Desktop US Launch: Core i7-8700K, GTX 1070 & More
MSI has started to sell its latest Infinite X desktops in the US. The new systems are based on Intel’s six-core Core i7 (Coffee Lake) processors, as well as custom Intel Z370-powered motherboards that support CPU overclocking. The most advanced configurations of the Infinite X come with Intel’s unlocked Core i7-8700K chips as well as MSI’s GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics cards. Also, MSI is set to allow some of its system integrator partners to build custom configurations of the Infinite X to address the needs of their customers.
Read AnandTech's reviews of the Core i7-8700K and the GTX 1080 Ti here!
As reported earlier, the MSI Infinite X will be the company’s most powerful desktop computer and an advancement for the whole series in general. The new PCs are not only based on six-core Core i7-8700K CPUs, and therefore offer better multitasking performance than predecessors do, but they support CPU overclocking. The custom Micro-ATX Intel Z370 motherboard that MSI uses for the Infinite X PCs offers a rather general overclocking functionality supported by the company's Command Center software (allows to adjust per-core frequency, increase CPU/DRAM voltages, improve cooling, etc.).
When it comes to cooling overclocked CPUs and GPUs, MSI’s new system is prepared very well. The Infinite X chassis uses a triple-chamber design with separate chambers for the CPU (this one also hosts RAM, SSD, PCH and some other components), the GPU, and the PSU (this one also hosts 2.5”/3.5” storage devices), isolating the hottest components from each other. Secondly, the graphics and the processor chambers are cooled down using MSI’s Silent Storm Cooling 3 Pro coolers that suck cool air from the outside of the case and then exhaust the warmer air in another direction. Thirdly, the CPU itself is cooled down using MSI’s custom Dragon liquid cooling system to ensure stable operation even when overclocked significantly beyond stock frequencies. According to MSI, cooling systems inside the Infinite X produce around 25 dB of noise in idle and less than 36 dB when operating at their full performance.
The custom micro-ATX motherboard has four DDR4 slots supporting up to 64 GB of memory, one PCIe x16 slot for a graphics card (MSI offers GeForce GTX 1070, GTX 1080 and GTX 1080 Ti options) and two M.2 slots for SSDs. As for connectivity, the Infinite X motherboard has a GbE port powered by Intel's I219V controller, Intel’s 1x1 Wireless-AC 3168 802.11ac Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 4.2 module, a 7.1-channel audio sub-system with MSI’s AudioBoost and Nahimic 2+ enhancements, USB Type-A and Type-C ports, DP and HDMI display outputs (in case iGPU is used for some reason) and so on.

MediaTek Reveals MT2621 SoC for IoT: Arm v7 MCU, Integrated GPRS/NB-IoT Modem
MediaTek this week announced a new SoC designed for ultra-low-power autonomous IoT applications such as wearables, security sensors, and similar devices. The MT2621 SoC integrates basic computational capabilities, a modem that supports GSM/GPRS and NB-IoT, and a number of input/output interfaces.
The MediaTek MT2621 features an Arm v7 MCU featuring one core running at 260 MHz, 4 MB of embedded Flash, and 160 KB of PSRAM for microcontroller applications that do not require substantial computational resources or memory. To connect to the outside world, the MT2621 integrates a modem DSP, a wideband module (that supports ultra-low/low/mid bands defined by the 3GPP Rel-14), RF capabilities, and even an antenna that can work over existing GSM/GPRS (as well as upcoming NB-IoT networks). The SoC supports dual standby functionality and can work over both networks simultaneously. To connect to local wireless peripherals, the MT2621 can use Bluetooth 4.2. The chip also has an LCM interface to attach LCDs, an interface for a camera, and audio interfaces to connect a speaker and a microphone.
The highly integrated design of the MT2621 allows device manufacturers to reduce the number of additional components to a minimum, which simplifies development cycles and lowers BOM costs. Furthermore, the MCU is being promoted as being power-efficient, which would enable a long battery life, which is crucial for battery-driven applications, including health/fitness trackers, IoT security sensors, smart meters and industrial equipment. Device manufacturers will also have to write their software for the MT2621 that can run a customized MCU-variant of Linux, but naturally not Android or similar operating systems.
MediaTek did not disclose which manufacturing technology it plans to use to produce the MT2621 on, but given rather modest compute capabilities of the chip (as well as target applications), the SoC will likely be made using an inexpensive low-power planar fabrication process. As for the availability timeframe, it depends on the developers of actual hardware. Typically, the development of low-power devices does not take too long, but then it can take months to validate these products and ensure everything works properly. Interested parties will need to contact their local Mediatek representatives for more information.

EKWB Announces EK-MLC Phoenix AIO: Modular and Expandable Liquid Cooling Family
This week EKWB has taken the wraps off of a new lineup of pre-filled products for liquid cooling, which the company is naming the MLC Phoenix family. The Phoenix lineup was created to cater to customers who may be unwilling to assemble a full custom loop, or simply do not have time to maintain a custom loop but still would like a premium cooling solution. Its modular design allows for ease of expansion for using any one of several of its pre-filled water blocks. All of the Phoenix products utilize zero-drop quick disconnect couplings between parts to allow for quick and spill-free changes of the water-cooling loop.
The loop will consist of at least two parts. First is the radiator core module containing the pump and radiator, then your cooling modules of choice, either CPU or Video Card modules, or, both. The radiator core module, a high-fin density EK-CoolStream radiator, comes pre-filled and includes the pump, as well as high-static pressure EK-Varder EVO fans. Unique to this setup, the radiator core modules include an integrated fan splitter hub to help reduce cable clutter. The pump and fans plug into the hub with only one PWM cable need to be plugged into the CPU fan header and one SATA Molex power cable. The radiator core modules have five options: 120mm, 240mm, 360mm, 140mm, and 280mm so there is to fit most cooling and space needs.
The CPU Cooling modules come in two flavors, one made for Intel and AM4 systems, and another designed specifically for the large AMD Threadripper CPUs. The Intel/AM4 solution supports Intel LGA1150/1151/1155/1156/2011-3/2066 sockets while the sTR4 model is compatible with AMD SocketTR4 (Socket SP3r2) and AMD Socket SP3 based motherboards. EK states the pre-filled CPU cooling module is based on the EK-Supremacy series of water blocks, comes with an error-preventing mounting mechanism for an easier installation, have low hydraulic restriction, and of course mates perfectly with all EK-MLC Phoenix radiator core modules.
As for the EK-MLC GPU cooling modules, there are 23 to choose from with more being added. These are designed to fit NVIDIA and AMD cards from the Geforce GTX 1070 to the TitanX Pascal on the NVIDIA side, Radeon RX Vega cards on the AMD side. The blocks are made from high-purity copper and directly cool the GPU, RAM (HBM2), and well as the VRM. It has a central inlet split-flow cooling engine designed for good hydraulic performance for use with its other MLC Phoenix parts. All blocks are equipped with a rotary terminal allowing the integrated tubing to rotate on their mount point for more flexibility when routing the loop. Most all EK-MLC GPU cooling module full cover blocks are available in Nickel Plexi and Nickel Acetal versions with the base of the blocks made of nickel plated electrolytic copper. The plexi variants also have two pre-drilled slots for 3mm LED diodes. All EK-MLC parts will come with a two-year warranty.
All EK-MLC products are currently available for pre-order through the EK-MLC configurator with shipping to start Monday, December 4th.

Samsung Starts Mass Production of Chips Using 10nm Low Power Plus (10LPP) Process Tech
Samsung Foundry on Wednesday revealed that it has started mass production of SoC products using its second generation 10 nm Low Power Plus (10LPP) fabrication technology. The new manufacturing process will enable developers of chips to reduce power consumption or increase performance of their products compared to the first-gen 10 nm tech (10LPE).
Like previous node updates from Samsung, the new 10LPP fabrication process promises a range of improvements depending on what a customer is looking for. On the performance front the process is said to offer 10% higher performance at the same complexity and power, or alternatively, customers can design for an up to 15% reduction in power consumption at the same frequency and complexity. Samsung Foundry does not disclose how it managed to improve the 10LPP vs. the 10LPE, but it is logical to assume that the company had to optimize the transistor structure somehow. Samsung’s 10LPP and 10LPE technologies are still very similar from design rules and manufacturing points of view, so experience obtained with the former will be applicable to the latter.

Samsung Foundry says that SoCs made using the 10LPP process technology will be used in devices to be launched early next year and onwards. The contract maker of semiconductors does not officially disclose which chips it is producing using the 10LPP process technology, but since it uses plural (“SoC products”), it all but given that there are more than one 10LPP SoC model in production. One of the candidates to be produced using the 10LPP is Samsung’s own Exynos 9 Series 9810 SoC that is expected to power the company’s 2018 flagship Galaxy S smartphones. Typically, Qualcomm also adopts Samsung’s latest process technologies along with the South Korean giant itself (to a large degree because its chips are used inside flagship Galaxy handsets too), but so far, Qualcomm has not made any announcements concerning the 10LPP.
Keeping in mind that while Samsung Foundry’s LPE process technologies are used primarily by Samsung itself and a very limited number of its customers, the LPP processes are adopted by a considerably larger group of clients. So the launch of the 10LPP means expanded usage of the company’s 10 nm node in general. In order to meet demand, Samsung will start to make SoCs using the 10LPP in its new S3 fab located in Hwaseong, Korea.
Meanwhile, the evolution of Samsung’s 10 nm node is not going to stop with the formal introduction of the 10LPP. Going forward, Samsung plans to introduce the 10LPU fabrication technology for ultra-low-power SoCs as well as the 8LPP manufacturing process for advanced SoCs. Samsung yet has to detail the 10LPU, but with the 8LPP it promises a 10% area reduction (at the same complexity) as well as a 10% lower power consumption (at the same frequency and complexity) compared to the 10LPP process due to narrower metal pitches and other optimizations.
“We will be able to better serve our customers through the migration from 10LPE to 10LPP with improved performance and higher initial yield,” said Ryan Lee, vice president of foundry marketing at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung with its long-living 10nm process strategy will continue to work on the evolution of 10nm technology down to 8LPP to offer customers distinct competitive advantages for a wide range of applications.”

Intel Xeon E3-1200 v7 Will Become Xeon Entry (Xeon E), Possible Intel with Radeon Graphics Launch
The last 12 months have seen an upheaval of Intel’s enterprise processor naming scheme, with a distinct mix of positive and negative responses. In previous years, Intel followed a naming scheme that provided the processor positioning, some of the features, the generation, and if it was a special sub-type all in one number, which scaled from the bottom of the stack to the top. This scheme had been in place for five or six generations, but was then flipped on its head when Intel announced the change of the Xeon E5 and E7 processor lines to the Xeon Scalable Platform, Xeon-SP, using heavy metals as the naming. More recently, the workstation-focused Xeon E5-1600 line was also renamed to Xeon W, for workstation. We have learned from separate sources that in the early part of next year, the next generation of entry-level Xeon E3-1200 processors will also be renamed to Xeon E, with E for entry.

Dissecting Intel's EPYC Benchmarks: Performance Through the Lens of Competitive Analysis
Although the AMD EPYC is definitely a worthy contender in the server space, AMD's technical marketing of the new CPU has been surprisingly absent, as the company not published any real server benchmarks. The only benchmarks published were SPEC CPU and Stream, with AMD preferring for its partners and third parties to promote performance. And, as our long-time readers know, while the SPEC CPU benchmarks have their merits and many people value them, they are a very poor proxy of most server workloads.
In every launch, we expect companies to offer an element of competitive analysis, often to show how their platform is good or better than the rest. At the launch of Intel's latest Xeon-SP platform, analysis to EPYC was limited to a high-level, as the systems were not as freely available as expected. However now, Intel's data center engineering group has been able to obtain a few EPYC systems and has started benchmarking, and finding ways to prove Xeon-SP dominance over the competition. This benchmarking, along with justifications of third-party verification, was distributed to the small set of Xeon-SP launch reviewers as a guide, to follow up on that high-level discussion some time ago. The Intel benchmarking document we received had a good amount of detail however, and the conference call we had relating to it was filled with some good technical tidbits.

NVIDIA Releases Maxwell-based GeForce MX130 & MX110 Mobile GPUs
Earlier this month, NVIDIA quietly released the Maxwell-based entry-level GeForce MX130 and MX110, joining the earlier Pascal-based MX150. The MX130 and MX110 product pages were later updated to specify that they were Maxwell-based parts. These discrete mobile GPUs are OEM-focused, and fill out the very bottom of NVIDIA’s mobile GPU product stack.
Officially, as with previous low-end GPU launches, NVIDIA is remaining tight-lipped on formal GPU specifications. In lieu of hard numbers on CUDA cores and clocks – the latter of which is variable among laptop designs due to power and cooling – NVIDIA is citing performance relative to the Intel UHD 620, the iGPU featured in the i5-7200U (and most other Intel 8th Gen Core CPUs). There the company has the MX110 listed as 1.5x faster in games than the UHD 620, while the MX130 is cited as 2.5x faster. In comparison, the MX150 was cited at 4x faster than the Intel's iGPU.

Presumably, these parts are GM108-based 940MX and 920MX rebrands, a common occurrence in mobile GPUs. A SiSoftware entry for a Dell Latitude 5591, mentioned on a Dell Accessories product page, details the MX130 as a 384 CUDA core configuration at 1189 MHz, which again suggests a rebranded GeForce 940MX. Based on the performance difference between the MX130 and MX110, it is likely that the MX110 is a rebrand of the 256 CUDA core 920MX, as opposed to the 384 CUDA core 930MX. As the MX130 and MX110 features both DDR3 and GDDR5 interfaces, OEMs may outfit video memory as they see fit.
Both Maxwell parts support Optimus and Turbo Boost 2.0. As is typical with their low-end mobile product launches, NVIDIA had no further details or information to provide.

Intel’s next Core i7 flagship could bring 8-cores to mainstream processors
Intel’s next-generation mainstream flagship processor will be a Core i7 CPU that sports no less than 8-cores with 16-threads, according to the latest from the rumor mill.
According to recent leaks, as reported by Wccftech.com, the 9th-generation flagship processor will be the Core i7-9700K which will up the ante to 8-cores from 6-cores (as seen in the current Coffee Lake flagship Core i7-8700K).
There isn’t any speculation regarding the other specs such as clock speeds or TDP, although Wccftech.com speculates that the 9th-gen processors will use a honed version of the current 14nm++ process. So it’ll be a Coffee Lake Refresh, effectively, not Cannon Lake which will drop down to an entirely new process (10nm).
Although even if architectural efficiency gains aren’t massive, sticking on an extra pair of cores for these top-end processors will obviously help Intel stay competitive when it comes to Ryzen’s large core counts.
Threads aplenty
There’s also further speculation that while the 9th-gen Core i5 and i3 ranges will keep the same core count as the current models, they will double up on the thread count (so Core i5 will be 6-cores, 12-threads, and Core i3 will be quad-core, 8-threads).
Take all this with a liberal sprinkling of salt as ever.
When might we see such processors, if they are indeed in the pipeline? They will apparently be launching at some point in 2018, although the report doesn’t hint at any rough timeline next year.

G.Skill Shrinks Latencies of DDR4-4000+ Kits for Coffee Lake: DDR4-4266 CL17 Announced
G.Skill has announced a new series of high-end 16 and 32 GB DDR4 kits for Intel’s Coffee Lake processors. Following in the footsteps of other vendors who have announced similar highly clocked 32 GB kits, the new G.Skill DDR4-4000+ kits offer 2 and 4 matched DIMM sets with high frequencies and CL17 timings. The new Trident Z RGB modules require a high-quality Intel Z370-based motherboard that can deliver “clean” power to them as well as a processor that can handle both high frequencies and relatively low latencies.
G.Skill’s low-latency Trident Z RGB dual-channel kits for Coffee Lake CPUs are rated for DDR4-4000 CL17 17-17-37 at 1.35 V, DDR4-4133 CL17 17-17-37 at 1.4 V and DDR4-4266 CL17 18-18-38 at 1.45 V. The kits consist of 8 GB modules based on pre-binned Samsung’s B-die 8 Gb ICs made using the company’s 20 nm process for DRAMs, just like all the other high-end DDR4 modules today. The new DIMMs come with XMP 2.0 SPD profiles to simplify their installation on supporting platforms.

When we first encountered G.Skill’s Trident Z memory kits for Intel’s Coffee Lake/Z370 platform earlier this year, we noticed that the company relaxed their tRAS sub-timings when compared to DIMMs designed for Intel’s X299 platform. Much to our surprise, the new low-latency Trident Z RGB DDR4-4000+ 32 GB kits shrink all the timings rather considerably compared to the company's other high-speed DDR4 kits. In fact, the new Trident Z RGB modules offer the lowest latencies among all DDR4-4000+ kits announced to date. Apparently, at least some of Intel’s latest desktop CPUs can handle not only extreme data transfer rates well beyond DDR4 specs, but also can do so with CL17 timings, albeit with a 12.5% –20% overvoltage and G.Skill’s tinkering.
To validate its Trident Z RGB DDR4-4000+ CL17 kits, G.Skill uses Intel’s Core i7-8700K CPUs as well as ASUS’ ROG Maximus Hero motherboards. Like other highly clocked 4 DIMM kits announced this fall, this comes with the caveat that not all Coffee Lake processors can handle ultra-fast memory modules in a 2 DPC configuration. Therefore, to take advantage of G.Skill's DDR4-4266 CL17 kit one is going to need some luck. At the same time, the company claims that hitting 4000 – 4266 MT/s is not very difficult on modern platforms and processors that can handle such speeds are not too rare (but a good cooling system is a must due to DRAM overvoltage).
In addition to its low-latency DDR4-4000+ CL17 kits for Intel’s Coffee Lake/Z370 platform, G.Skill has also introduced the absolutely fastest 32 GB DDR4 kit to date that is rated to run at 4400 MT/s with CL19 19-19-39 timings and 1.5 V. The kit naturally requires a high-end Z370 motherboard and a pre-binned CPU with a memory controller that can support such data transfer rates.
With the addition of all the latest kits that G.Skill introduced in the recent weeks, the company’s lineup of modules for Coffee Lake/Z370 platform now looks as follows:

G.Skill plans to start sales of its Trident Z RGB DDR4-4000+ CL17 kits for Intel’s latest platform in January 2018. The manufacturer never touches upon MSRP of its high-end modules in press releases, but expect the new products to be priced well above average dual-channel kits. In the meantime, the fastest Trident Z RGB 32 GB dual-channel kit that can be ordered now is rated for DDR4-4000 CL18 and costs $649.99 (at press time, it was out of stock at Newegg).
